PHASE 2 WELL UNDERWAY

The Partners for Healthier Communities Committee: North Cariboo is excited to announce that Phase 2 of the Empowering Family Health Project is well underway.

On April 22, 2017,  Growing North Cariboo Society under this project was the primary funder of Seedy Saturday 2017.  The event was a one day event hosted by the Seedy Saturday Committee and it was very successful.  Over 500 people attended this event.  The event is well described in the letter that can be read here.  The P$HC:NC was pleased to be able to support this important community based event.

FOOD PRESERVATION IN BARLOW CREEK

The final workshops in Barlow Creek under Phase 1 of the Empowering Family Health Project were held on Saturday, Feb. 4th at the Barlow Creek Fire Department.

Both Melinda Fellows of Bowron Lake and Suzie Myles of Bouchie Lake shared their knowledge and passion about food preservation, the importance of it for food security and its health and economic benefits.  Ideas such as using the pressure canner, how to oven can, using lower sugar pectin, and how to vacuum seal were all discussed.  A great workshop ladies!

LIVING WITH YOUR FOOD

On January 13th, the 2nd of 5 Rabbit and Poultry Production Workshops under the Empowering Family Health Project was held.  8 residents came together in Bouchie Lake and learnt all about caring for Rabbits and Poultry from presenter, Lou Dobie.  The workshop was fun, informative, engaging and hands on.

The participants learnt all about caring for both poultry (layers and meat birds) and rabbit in our North Cariboo climate.  One of the best parts of the workshop was that Lou included both a Rooster and Hen and a Buck and a Doe rabbit in her teachings.
The workshop was held at the Bouchie Lake Country Store.

8th.  On January 7th, a group met at the Barlow Creek Fire Hall for the workshop titled "Living Off Your Backyard" with presenter, Colleen Gatenby.  Colleen's presentation was an inspiration and covered off what one can do in one's "backyard" to ensure one's own food security.  Colleen's "backyard" includes the Quesnel Downtown Community Garden which explains the above quote.

Thank you to the Barlow Creek Volunteer Fire Department for opening up their hall as the venue for this workshop.  It worked perfectly.
